For quite some time I have marveled at the deafening silence emanating from the mainstream religious element in my native U.S.A. - a country that's always been big on organized religion. As a kid being fed nice protestant white-folks goop, my favorite Bible stories were those about the old-time prophets who weren't shy about looking swollen potentates in the eye and telling them what was what... even when miracles didn't immediately ensue to prove them right. I've been feeling like we could use a few of those old-timers on the scene today, but there seem to be none about. The "professors of faith" seem to be fine with everything the State is doing. Their silence is downright deafening.
Where are them fiery Prophets when we needs 'em? Heaven knows the likes of an obscure maritime folk singer is a far cry from anything like them. But it seems it's time somebody started to deliver the same message to the swollen potentates of today as the old-timers delivered to those of the past:
Ahoy there you for the deeds you do
Yer ruddy old soul will be goin' to...

lyrics
Down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down
In the days of old they had prophets bold
Who the ruddy old skippers did tell
Ahoy, there, you, for the deeds you do
Yer ruddy old soul will be goin’ to...
Down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down
The prophet named Dan’l once bullyragged
The ruddy ol’ skipper of old
For the worshiping of vain idols, he said,
He’d be goin’ where the weather ain’t cold
The ruddy ol’ skipper hoisted storm flags
He tossed Dan’l in a lion’s den
He had a few drinks with a angel in there
And came a-walkin’ back out again
Down, down, down, down
(He said…)
CHORUS:
Ahoy there, you, for the deeds you do
You’ll not be joinin’ the Heavenly crew
Ahoy there, shipmate, and hearken to me well
Yer ruddy old soul will be goin’ to...
Down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down
Now Dan’l he had three shipmates
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
To the ruddy ol’ skipper they’d not bow down
Said he, “To me furnace ye'll go!”
He heated it seven times hotter
An’ he tossed them prophets right in
They had a couple drinks with a angel in there
And came a-walkin’ back out again
Down, down, down, down
(They said…)
[CHORUS]
Now we’ve got a ruddy ol’ skipper aboard
As bad as ever there was
Deservin’ of the fire and the brimstone for
The black evil deeds he does
Where be them prophets when we needs ‘em?
They just sits with the angels and drinks
When we needs us a ruddy good skipper right here
Afore this ruddy ship sinks!
Down, down, down, down
(And we says…)
[ CHORUS ]
