about

On October 14, 2012, early in the morning, I saw a Facebook post about my old friend and former bandmate, Tim Moody. At first it didn't sink in. I knew his mother had been ill, and I thought the post must be about her. The it hit me. No, it's about Tim. Kaboom. I would later learn that we had been the victim of a sudden, massive coronary.

One of the commenters said: "I feel like something is missing , it's Moody." Moody's Missing... a song title if I ever heard one. And it just came tumbling out on my old Vega banjo over the next few hours. And I stayed up way too late recording, mixing and uploading.

Then over the next couple of days I'd listen now and again, trying to imagine what Tim, an incredible recording engineer and producer as well as musician, would point out and suggest I fix... as best I could with all the gear I haven't got. Then I got a note from one of the early listeners telling me there simply HAD to be some mandolin. So I borrowed one from my Russian bluegrass friends, learned 3 chords, and added them near the end... my first-ever attempt at playing it.

I hope you enjoy the song even if you aren't part of the history.

Re-mastered 16-October-2016.

lyrics

Foggy morning head, I get out of bed
Loggin' on to see what's new while I been dreamin'
Coffee's hot. Twitter's not.
My inbox looks like spam, a lot
I ain't ready for the news headlines a-screamin'

I make a Facebook look-in
To see what all's been cookin'
With folks I know from half a world away
One post at first I can't quite follow
Then my insides turn all cold and hollow
And I know this ain't no ordinary day

Moody's missing
There's silence in the strings
And things will not be quite the same again
Moody's missing
But in the evening I'll still listen
To catch the stains of Moody's mandolin

Well I've lost friends before
In stupid useless war
And I suppose I should know how to take this better
We were younger way back when
Now we're crusty tough old men
So stupid how these eyes keep getting wetter

The years will make you wise
And teach you to disguise
The fool you are, and the fool you've always been
But from some you just can't hide it
For some reason they decided
The fool you are is just fine as a friend

Moody's missing
There's silence in the strings
And things will not be quite the same again
Moody's missing
But in the evening I still listen
To catch the stains of Moody's mandolin

Unpredictable and wild
Gentle as a child
Moods volatile and varied as the sea
Perfectionist demands
Music in two hands
I still don't know just what he saw in me

Lord knows how I tried
To run away and hide
Burning bridges with the past, that's been my way
A wiser head than I
Subterfuges didn't fly
He tracked my down from half a world away

(And now)
Moody's missing
There's silence in the strings
And thing will not be quite the same again
Moody's missing
But in the evening I still listen
To catch the stains of Moody's mandolin

Out on the porch tonight
After sunset's faded light
Sippin' wine and playing on my old banjo
I noticed a new star
And I seemed to hear an old guitar
Joining in on the chorus, soft and low

And I know Moody isn't missing
There's no silence in the strings
Though things cannot be quite the same again
No Moody isn't missin'
And the evening, if I listen
I catch the strains of Moody's mandolin.
