about

They say that as a songwriter, you should write about what you know. Having lived almost 2 decades in northwest Russia, I know about winter. It's what we have most of the year. And I seem to have several winter songs. This is one. Originally conceived as more of a bluegrass song, this arrangement is more 2-step country.

Inspiration for this came from the annual autumn migration of the wild geese. There's something intensely moving about that sight, at least for me. There comes a day when the wind is out of the north, and the huge "V"s of geese come bookin' southward riding it... day and night. And you know it's time to batten down the hatches, hunker down, and wait out the winter.

So pour a wee drop of something cheering, sit back, and enjoy. Or grab your 2-step partner and head for the dance floor...

lyrics

Last roses of the summer
In a vase upon the table
Faded pink and yellow petals starting to fall
The pumpkins in the garden shine
With frosty dew in the morning light
After listening through the moonlit night
To the wild geese call

Chorus:
When we hear them cry on silver wings
Flying south at night
Heralds of the winter storms to come
I'll pour a cheering drop of whiskey
We'll sit nodding by the fire
Waiting out the winter in a cozy country home

Bridge:
The kids will come from the city
And make the Yuletide bright
We'll sit remembering bygone times
By lamp and fire light
Then through the months of snow and cold
We'll keep the home fires bright
And sleep with extra blankets
Through the long cold winter night

See the last rose of summer
In a vase upon the table
Faded pink and yellow petals starting to fall
The pumpkins in the garden shine
With frosty dew in the morning light
After listening through the moonlit night
To the wild geese call
